Mr Dattels was educated at St. Andrew’s College, Aurora, Ontario from 1961 to 1965. Between 1965 and 1969, he studied at McGill University where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree – and at the University of Western Ontario from 1969 to 1972, graduating with a law degree (cum laude).
In 1972, he was articled to Messrs Thomson Rogers, a Toronto-based law firm and completed his Ontario Bar Admission in 1974. He then joined the Toronto law firm of Perry, Farley & Onyschuk where he worked between 1974 and 1976. Later, while employed at Venturetek International Limited, he completed the Programme for Management Development at Harvard University.
Stephen emigrated from Canada in 1999 to reside in London. He has currently taken up residence in Bermuda.
Stephen, with his wife Jennifer, together with their children Graham Dattels and David Dattels, have committed to support charitable work in Canada and overseas. The Dattels Family Foundation, which was established in 2009, is intended to provide focus for the family’s continued philanthropic programme and to provide a lasting source of funding for projects which align with the core values of the Dattels family.
Stephen also enjoys collecting modern art, travelling, playing golf, cycling and skiing.
